Case study

Leaking felt roof sealed in Shepherd's Bush, London W12

Felt · 65 m² · 6 August 2025

Completed HYDRONYLON flat roof in Shepherd's Bush, London W12, with Westfield London in the background

A flat roof on Uxbridge Road in Shepherd's Bush, a short walk from Westfield London, was letting water through into the flat beneath it. The felt covering had reached the end of its service life, so rather than chase a single split, the whole roof was waterproofed in the HYDRONYLON system. All 65 m² were treated, the leak was stopped, and the work was completed in four working days in August 2025.

The challenge

Water was coming through into the home below, but the real problem was bigger than any one crack. The felt was old and worn across the whole roof, with the surface breaking up along the laps and seams. The fall of the roof carried rainwater towards the area where it was getting in, and on a roof in this condition water rarely enters where it shows: it can travel under a failed covering and reappear some distance from the original fault. That makes spot repairs a gamble. With only the covering at fault and the deck still sound, the sensible step was to seal the entire roof in one continuous system, stop the ingress for good and add years to the roof's life.

The solution

The existing felt was cleaned down and primed with HYDRONYLON Primer Emulsion EG to lock down the old surface and give a sound base. HYDRONYLON HP went on as the base layer with Technical Mesh SW-1 embedded for reinforcement, carried across the field and dressed into every upstand, outlet and rooflight kerb, then finished with a graphite HYDRONYLON HN top coat. Each coat was left to cure fully before the next, so the work ran cold over four working days and the building stayed in use throughout. The system is liquid-applied and cures into one seamless, fully bonded surface with no hot works, so the details that usually leak first are reinforced as part of it; see how the system works.

The result

The whole roof is now a single, seamless waterproof layer, bonded across all 65 m² and turned up at every detail. The leak into the flat below stopped, and a roof that was worn out has been given a fresh, fully sealed surface and a much longer life, without the cost and disruption of a tear-off. The HYDRONYLON system is assessed under European Technical Assessment ETA-23/0735, and because the work was completed by a HYDRONYLON Approved Contractor it carries a 10-year product guarantee on the materials.
